THE FURRY, SEARCH AND RESCUE
Somewhere cold, freezing, and extreme..
Along the dangerous route through the Alps Mountain range, in southwestern Switzerland, at an elevation of 8,100ft, there sits Great St. Bernard Shelter, providing lodging and protecting travellers from harsh alpine conditions and robbers.
The shelter acquired its first dogs originally bred to guard and protect its residents.
However, the St. Bernard dog soon began to display remarkable abilities: rescuing travellers lost in the mountains and finding people buried under snow. The dogs are often depicted as carrying a small flask of brandy around their necks to revive travelers.
St. Bernard rescue dogs were credited with saving the lives of more than 2,000 people by lying on top of the injured and providing warmth, and guiding Napoleon’s soldiers crossing through the pass.
WHY IS BERNIE, OUR MASCOT?
Throughout the history, the St Bernard dogs were specially bred and trained for the role of mountain rescue in the Swiss Alps, because they were sufficiently strong to cross deep snow drifts and had the capacity to track lost travelers by scent.
Thus, the presence of Bernie in Swiss-Belhotel International symbolizes
SECURITY, SAFETY, AND WARMTH.
