About Medan Medan is the capital of Indonesia's North Sumatra Province. Located on the northern coast of Sumatra, Medan is the fourth largest city in Indonesia. With a population of about 2 million people, Medan is the largest Indonesian city outside of Java. Historically, Medan has been a centre of government and commercial activity, dominating development of Indonesia's west-ern region since the 1860's. There are many old buildings in the city that still retain their Dutch architecture, including the old City Hall, the central Post Office, the Tirtanadi Water Tower, which is Medan City's icon, and Titi Gantung bridge.
One of the unique features of Medan is the motorised becaks that are found almost every-where to take passengers around in the city. The fare for riding a becak is relatively cheap and is usually negotiated beforehand. There are also more common forms of transport, such as taxis and minibuses, known as sudako. The seaport of Belawan is about 20 km to the north of the city centre. Polonia International Airport is located in the heart of the city. Kuala Namu International Airport is a new airport currently under construction and due to replace Polonia in mid-2012.
