Grand Swiss-Belhotel Medan received the National Green Award 2011 – 2013 from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of the Republic of Indonesia through the Directorate General of Tourism Destination Development.
Representative of the Green Committee of Grand Swiss-Belhotel Medan, Ms. Nelly Lim accepted the award at a luncheon gathering attended by representatives from 24 hotels in Indonesia which meet the criteria of “Green”. The award was announced by Mr. Naning S. A. Adiwoso BID, Green Building Council Indonesia, and presented to the winner by Indonesia's Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Ms. Mari Elka Pangestu at Balairung Soesilo Soedarman, Sapta Pesona Building on 19 December 2011.
With this award, Grand Swiss-Belhotel Medan is recognised as the 5-star hotel in Medan that is implementing green environment and sustainable development. The award is given following an assessment by visiting and directly monitoring the hotel concerned and after passing a verification assessment by the committee.
To qualify, the hotel must show care for environmental and sustainable development issues. Some of the aspects involved in the assessment include (1) building construction in terms of energy and water saving, land management policies, the use of eco-friendly building materials, and monitoring air pollution; (2) operational management in terms of the purchase and use of environment friendly supplies in the hotel's operation, reducing operating costs, and enhancing the green image of the hotel through a smart partnership with an external organisation in socialising green activities and programmes.
