Located on the northern coast of Sumatra, Medan is the fourth largest city in Indonesia. With a population of about 2 million people, Medan is the largest Indonesian city outside of Java. Historically, Medan has been a centre of government and commercial activity, dominating development of Indonesia's western region since the 1860's. There are many old buildings in the city that still retain their Dutch architecture, including the old City Hall, the central Post Office, the Tirtanadi Water Tower, which is Medan City's icon, and Titi Gantung bridge. There are several historic places of interest, such as Maimun Palace (1887–1891) and the Great Mosque built (1906) in Moroccan style by the Dutch architect Dingemans. In 2005, a catholic temple was built in Indo-Mogul style and devoted to Graha Maria Annai Velangkanni (Our Lady of Good Health). The temple consists of two stories and a small tower of seven storeys, and has become the second most important pilgrimage site in Asia. Medan has a mix of different cultures and ethnicities, including Chinese, Javanese, Toba- Batak, Minangkabau, Mandailing Batak and Karo Batak. Each ethnic group contributes to the rich variety of cuisines found in every corner of Medan. The city has become well known for "food-tourism" with sweet Javanese cuisine, delicious Batak grilled pork, hot and spicy Padang dishes, savoury Chinese noodles and spicy Indian curry dishes available 24 hours every day of the week. Shoppers will delight in the city's modern malls, while nightlife includes pubs, clubs and Karaoke bars.
