Banjarmasin is the capital of South Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is located on a delta island near the junction of the Barito and Martapura rivers. As a result, Banjarmasin is sometimes called the "River City".
Banjarmasin is served by the Syamsudin Noor Airport, located about 25 km outside the town. The town is also served by a port, named Trisakti Harbour.
The Kalimantan area is unique for trekking and expeditions through the connected trails that lead you through the virgin forests. The jungle trails range from 2 hours to weeks in length, depending on the route you choose. Camping in the forest may be requested in advance, or you can stay overnight with the locals in the villages.
The Dayak people in the villages at Kalimantan are trustworthy, and have a good sense of humor. Almost Each Dayak Tribe is self-sufficient, and producing all their own food and supplementing their diet through hunting. Hunting is done with either home-made rifles, blowpipes or packs of dogs and spears. The hinterlands of Kalimantan are rural and mostly isolated from the rest of Indonesia’s economy. The forest is being protected from logging, but tourists are warmly welcomed. No one in the area speaks any English, so unless you hire a guide at least some knowledge of Indonesian will be required.
While it is often rains in Kalimantan, the period between July-September is the drier, and the best for visiting. The trails dry up, the forest comes to life, and butterflies are plentiful. Another good time to visit is in November and December when fruit and wild boar are in abundance. November also tends to be dry and is honey harvesting season.
