Travel Information |
Wuhan is the capital of Hubei province, People's Republic of China, and is the most populous city in central China. Situated on the fertile Jianghan Plain where the Hanjiang river joins the great Yangtze, Wuhan was historically known as the Three Towns of Wuhan with Hankou and Hanyang on the west bank, and Wuchang on the east. For centuries, this city has been the center of trade and transportation in central China. Today it is an important hub in central China and a feature of Yangtze River cruises for sightseers and businessmen traveling from Sichuan to Shanghai or Hong Kong. Wuhan is a city with both an ancient history and a thriving present. Historic relics excavated from ancient tombs tell of the city's long history as a trading and commercial center, going as far back as 3,500 years. In the period of Pre-Qin (770 B.C. - 221 B.C.) in feudal Chinese history, Wuhan was the cradle of the brilliant Chu Civilization. Starting here, merchants followed the great Yangtze River and lake network to expand businesses throughout the entire country. During the Qing Dynasty in the 1800s, parts of Hankou were established as a British Concession, and the town became an open trading port and one of the four best-known towns in the country. Steeped in both rich history and natural wonders, Wuhan is a city with plenty to offer for sightseers. The Hubei Provincial Museum and Yellow Crane Tower are two places to appreciate ancient Chinese history and culture. In the museum, chimes excavated from tombs reveal the incredible achievement of ancient people in music, acoustics and metallurgy. The classic poems and inscriptions on the tower inspire the spirit as visitors pretend to be a poet with a bird's-eye view of the river from the tower window. And of course, there is the famous Villa of Chairman Mao Zedong on the scenic bank of East Lake, Wuchang. Wuhan has wonderlands for epicures, including the famous are Ji Qing Jie night street and Hu Bu Xiang breakfast street. At Ji Qing Jie visitors can sample popular Wuhan snacks while being entertained by classical folk musicians. Snacks tops on The shopaholics amongst us can satisfy themselves along Han Zheng Street and the bustling walking street near Hanjiang Road. Comb through the dazzling array of shops in traditional Chinese storefronts to find that special gift for your friends and family. And when night falls, visitors can partake in Wuhan’s impressive nightlife. Spend the evening at disco parlors, karaoke rooms, bars and pubs and other interesting places.
